Today I woke at 5am so I could do my WOW before work. I have always loved working out in the morning and today was no exception. There is nothing like getting a great workout before the rest of the world has even rolled out of bed. I then worked a 7am-4pm shift full of really cool, high acuity cases.

Before I post my WOW, I would like to give everyone an update to John’s whereabouts. Since our trip to Fiji, John has been involved in a movie project. He is currently traveling the world, visiting all the sites of Bruce Lee’s films. He is recording a documentary that involves interviewing witnesses that were on site during the filming of his movies. John is filming, writing, and editing the entire project. So far he has been in Hong Kong, Macaua, China, and now Rome. I got to view his documentary of the life on Leonard Peikoff, and some of the material for his documentary of the life of Ayn Rand, and I gotta tell you, his work is incredible. Perhaps John can post a comment letting us know how his travels are going, and I’ll try to keep the BBS ship afloat for now.

I spent a few hours this week trolling PubMed and other literature sites for good recent articles on high intensity training and have not turned up any quality studies. In the next couple of weeks I am considering posting some of the “things I believe but cannot prove” to open up some dialogue and discussion.

For now here is my WOW

Nautilus Plateloader Bicep- stable weight and TUL
Tricep Pushdown-stable weight and TUL
Thick Bar Wrist curl-stable weight, up 8 seconds
Thick Bar Wrist Extension-stable weight, up 5 seconds
Med-X abdominal- up 2 pounds, down 5 seconds.

Dr. Doug McGuff will be performing a seminar at the mighty Greg and Ann-Marie Anderson’s facility (Ideal Exercise) in Seattle. If you’re fortunate enough to be in the area, please drop in and attend.

This week I did my Big 5 routine late in the day on Sunday. Wendy and I took the kids and met up with some friends and their kid for a weekend in a cabin at Lake Jocassee and had a wonderful time. We got a reprieve on the weather Saturday and were able to spend most of the day on the boat tubing, swimming and searching for waterfalls. I was tempted to do my workout Friday, as I was fearful we would not get back in time Sunday. I actually drove down to Ultimate Exercise, but forgot my keys to the building at home, and the place was already closed for the weekend. So fate intervened in my neurotic tendencies to sacrifice recovery for scheduling. Fate served me well, as I had a great Big 5 workout with several improvements that were better than I had hoped for.

Leg Press- up 2pounds, up 11 seconds
Pulldown-stable weight and TUL (Ken Hutchin’s camless beast from Hell)
Chest Press- up 2 pounds, same TUL
Pullover- up 2.5 pounds, down 8 seconds
Overhead Press- up 2 pounds, up 10 seconds

I am still feeling solid on the Big5/Little 5 rotation, so I will reserve the 3-way split rotation for later. I did a Little 5 rotation today and had minimal improvements. I am on a string of evening shifts (very busy) in the ER which does blunt my recovery somewhat. Nonetheless, this was a solid workout with a few improvements.

Calf Raise on Med-X leg press- stable
Nautilus plate-load Bicep-stable
Tricep pushdown- up 5 seconds
Formulator wrist flexion-up 3 seconds
Formulator wrist extension-up 5 seconds
Med-X abdominal- up 10 seconds

I did a Big 5 workout today, despite doing a workout at A.J. Bentley’s home gym this past Wednesday during my whirlwind tour of Salt Lake City. Despite the lack of recovery, I had a great workout. Being off from the ER probably saved me. When I look back on my workout records, working in the ER has a very big effect on recovery, almost as much as a Big 5 workout. I broke even on 3 of the 5 movements, and improved on 2. I experienced a great metabolic effect and a really great pump that lasted for hours.

Leg Press- same weight and TUL
Pullover- same weight and TUL
Chest Press- Went up 2 lbs, but down 10 seconds TUL
Row- Went up 2 lbs at stable TUL
Overhead Press- Went up 2 pounds, and up 10 seconds

Post your WOW’s. Also, comment on what affects your recovery besides the workout itself.

I just got back from Salt Lake City, Utah. A follower of the blog , A.J. Bentley had me out to speak to a group of financial advisors and retirement planners. I was a little skeptical as to how I would be received, but the audience was one of the most receptive I had ever encountered. I spent my lecture time diagramming human metabolism and laying out the concept of global metabolic conditioning and how BBS combined with a hunter-gatherer diet can act to reverse the metabolic syndrome.

Thanks to A.J. for having me out to Salt Lake (an absolutely beautiful city). Thanks also to those who sponsored my lecture, Brandon Shea of Pioneer investments, Chris Monachino of American Century, and Scott Maney of Invesco-Aim.

If anyone else is interested in speaking engagements, phone consultations, or local seminars conducted at UE, I have a new phone dedicated to these activities. The number is (864)985-3438. Just leave a message, and someone will get back with you.
